Investigating the Mediating Role of Self-Talk in the Relationship Between Secure Attachment and Children's Behavioral Self-Regulation

Purpose: The present study aimed to investigate the mediating role of self-talk in the relationship between secure attachment and children's behavioral self-regulation.
Method: The present study was conducted as a basic research in terms of its purpose and as a descriptive study of correlation based on path analysis in terms of its nature. The statistical population included all 3-6 year old boys and girls in kindergartens in Garmsar city and their parents. According to Klein's (2015) suggestion regarding the optimal sample size for structural equation modeling, 250 children, 130 girls and 120 boys, were selected using a cluster random sampling method. The research data collection tools included the Attachment Disorder Interview developed by Smike and Zineh (1999), the Self-Talk Questionnaire, and the Structured Observation of Self-Regulation by Ponitz et al. (2008). Descriptive and inferential statistical methods were used to analyze the data.
Findings: Based on the results obtained, the research hypotheses were confirmed. Accordingly, secure attachment style has a direct effect on children's behavioral self-regulation. Self-talk also has a direct effect on children's behavioral self-regulation. Also, secure attachment style has an indirect effect on behavioral self-regulation through self-talk.
Conclusion: Children with secure attachment perform better in cognitive self-regulation. The reason for this is that emotional safety, stress reduction, and constructive communication patterns provide the foundation for the development of executive functions of the brain.<span style="font-family:"Cambria",serif">
