Objective: This study aimed to explain the structural model of academic burnout based on early maladaptive schemas (EMS), with academic self-defeating behaviors serving as a mediating variable.
Method: The research employed a correlational design using structural equation modeling (SEM). Data were collected from 212 undergraduate students at Islamic Azad University, Roudehen Branch, during the 2023–2024 academic year. Data were processed and analyzed using SPSS (version 26) and SmartPLS (version 3). It should be noted that more than 250 questionnaires were initially distributed; however, a number of incomplete responses and those containing outlier data were excluded, resulting in a final valid sample of 212 participants.
Findings: The research findings indicate that early maladaptive schemas have a direct effect on academic burnout, as well as an indirect effect mediated by academic self-defeating behaviors.
Conclusion: Early maladaptive schemas, through their influence on individuals' cognitive processing and functioning, can affect various life domains—particularly academic settings—and contribute to outcomes such as diminished educational and academic performance.<span style="font-family:"Cambria",serif">
