Epidemiological and Pathological Characteristics of Renal Cell Carcinoma with Outcome Evaluation: A Single Center Study from Shiraz, Iran

Introduction and objectives: Renal cell carcinoma is the seventh most common human neoplasm with a global incidence of about 2%. Incidence of RCC in Iran is lower than other parts of the world although it seems to be on increase. The clear cell variant is the most common subtype.
Materials and methods: 310 patients were included in this retrospective study at Shiraz University of Medical Science in Iran. The demographic and histopathological features, tumor stage, and patients' outcome were evaluated.
Results: The highest prevalence of RCC was seen in the male age group of 60-80 years old. The most common subtype was clear cell variant followed by papillary and chromophobe variants. Most of the tumors were 4-7 cm in size, limited to the kidney, uni-focal, and located in the right side of the upper pole. The most frequent Fuhrman nuclear grade was grade 2. According to TNM staging, most of tumors were included in T1 N0 Mx category with stage I at presentation time. 2-year and 3-year survival rates were 87.3% and 78.7%.
Conclusions: RCC is mostly common among the elderly males. The higher tumor TNM stage had a correlation with higher tumor size, sarcomatoid feature, and survival rate. The metastatic rate was more common in male patients than females. Also, the nuclear grade showed a significant relationship with tumor size and stage.
